EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based, highly effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Mayfield, 2019)

How does it work?
EMDR is not like the typical "talk therapy" model. After establishing coping skills and emotion regulation techniques during the first few session, the client will be ready for the Reprocessing sessions. During these sessions, the client is encouraged to notice the difficult memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (a rhythmic left-right pattern- originally using eye movements). This pattern has been compared to what happens during the REM (rapid eye movement) sleep cycle. The outcome is typically a reduction in PTSD symptoms and rapid improvement of negative emotions, beliefs, and physical sensations.

How long does it take?
It is recommended that the Reprocessing sessions last between 60-90 minutes. The amount of time it takes for a client to complete EMDR treatment depends on the client's history, the nature of the traumatic experience(s), and any time or financial constraints. For many clients, EMDR as been shown to accomplish transformational healing in fewer sessions than other psychotherapy models.
